Fakhar Zaman Confident of National Team Return Despite Setbacks
Pakistan’s left-handed opener, Fakhar Zaman, recently broke his silence about the fitness issues that led to his exclusion from the national squad for the upcoming South Africa tour. Currently representing the Markhors in the ongoing Champions T20 Cup, Fakhar expressed confidence in his readiness to return to international cricket.
Fakhar’s Response to Fitness Speculations
During an interview following the Markhors’ match against the Lions, Fakhar dismissed doubts about his physical condition.
Fakhar on His Current Form
“I’m fit, and that’s why I’m playing. If there is a chance, I will play,” Fakhar stated confidently. Reflecting on his journey, he added, “I started my career at the Champions Trophy, and I’m grateful for my performances that helped Pakistan win matches. In this tournament, my goal is to perform well and lead my team to victory.”
His remarks highlight his determination to silence critics and focus on proving himself through performance.
Setbacks in Fakhar’s Career
Fakhar’s exclusion from the national squad is part of a challenging phase in his career. Recently, he missed out on central contracts for the first time in eight years, marking a significant blow for the seasoned player.
PCB’s Stance on Fakhar’s Exclusion
Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi explained that Fakhar’s omission was primarily due to his failure to meet fitness standards. “There is an issue regarding his tweet, but it is not as important as his fitness,” Naqvi clarified during a press conference.
Zaman had reportedly failed a fitness test, and the PCB emphasized that maintaining physical standards is non-negotiable for national team players.
The Social Media Controversy
Fakhar’s exclusion was further compounded by controversy surrounding his public criticism of the selection committee. He had taken to social media to express disapproval over the decision to drop Babar Azam from the Test squad, a move the PCB deemed inappropriate.
PCB’s Policy on Player Conduct
Naqvi addressed this issue firmly: “We cannot tolerate players commenting publicly on selection issues. If the selection committee decides not to play a player, others cannot start tweeting in protest. This will not be allowed.”
Fakhar’s Commitment to a Comeback
Despite the setbacks, Fakhar stays optimistic about his cricket career. He is focused on delivering strong performances in domestic tournaments like the Champions T20 Cup. Fakhar believes this will help him return to the national team.
