Tom Latham Ruled Out of Pakistan ODI Series, Bracewell to Lead New Zealand
New Zealand’s wicketkeeper-batter Tom Latham has been sidelined from the upcoming one-day international (ODI) series against Pakistan due to a hand injury. With Latham out, Michael Bracewell will continue to captain the team.
Regular white-ball skipper Mitchell Santner is currently engaged in the Indian Premier League (IPL), leaving Bracewell in charge during the recent T20 series, where he guided New Zealand to a 4-1 triumph over Pakistan.
Latham was originally set to lead the Black Caps in the three-match ODI series commencing in Napier on Saturday. However, he suffered a fractured hand while batting in the nets, requiring at least a month to recover, as confirmed by New Zealand Cricket (NZC) in an official statement.
Meanwhile, opener Will Young will be unavailable for the final two ODIs as he prepares to welcome his first child with his wife.
Expressing his disappointment over Latham’s injury, New Zealand head coach Gary Stead stated, “Losing Tom as captain just before the series starts is unfortunate, and we wish him a swift recovery.” He added, “Michael has done a commendable job leading the T20 squad, and the team remains in capable hands.”
Henry Nicholls has recovered from a calf injury and will step in for Latham, while Mitch Hay is set to take over wicketkeeping duties. Additionally, Canterbury batsman Rhys Mariu has received his first national call-up as batting cover.
“We have had to remain adaptable throughout this tour due to multiple player absences,” Stead said. “However, this opens doors for other players. It’s exciting to introduce Rhys to the squad and have Henry back in action.”
