Saudi Arabia Issues Urgent Warning to Umrah Pilgrims: Leave by April 29
Saudi Arabia has set a strict deadline for Umrah pilgrims: depart the Kingdom by April 29 or face severe penalties, including fines, jail time, and deportation. The Ministry of Hajj and Umrah emphasized that overstaying an Umrah visa is a serious legal violation.
Why the Deadline?
As the Kingdom prepares for the upcoming Hajj season, authorities are cracking down on visa overstays to ensure a smooth and safe pilgrimage. According to Gulf News, the growing number of pilgrims attempting to remain illegally has raised concerns.
Enhanced Security Measures
Lieutenant General Mohammed Abdullah Al Bassami, Director of Public Security, stressed, “Security is non-negotiable. Our advanced systems protect pilgrims and ensure efficient crowd management.” Saudi Arabia uses cutting-edge AI and real-time monitoring to manage millions of visitors at holy sites like the Grand Mosque, preventing overcrowding and ensuring safety.
Consequences of Overstaying
- First-time violators: Fines up to SAR 15,000 (~$4,000) and immediate deportation.
- Repeat offenders: Up to six months in prison and fines as high as SAR 50,000.
- Accomplices: Those hiding or aiding violators face fines up to SAR 100,000, jail, and deportation. Vehicles used in violations may be seized.
Pilgrimage service companies failing to report overstays could face fines starting at SAR 25,000, escalating to SAR 100,000 for repeated offenses.
Nationwide Crackdown
Between March 27 and April 2, Saudi authorities detained over 18,400 people for violating residency, labor, or border laws. Nearly 13,000 were caught for residency violations, and more than 3,500 attempted illegal border crossings.
A Call for Compliance
“Every rule is designed to protect pilgrims,” said security expert Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Adel Zamzami. “Violations disrupt the safety and harmony of this sacred system.” Lt. Gen. Al Bassami reaffirmed the Kingdom’s commitment to safeguarding holy sites, warning that any breaches will face strict consequences.
Pilgrims are urged to comply with the April 29 deadline to avoid legal trouble and support a safe Hajj season.
