Pakistan Pumps Up Fuel Levy: What It Means for You!

The government has jacked up the petroleum levy on petrol, diesel, and other fuels, starting April 16, 2025. This means higher costs at the pump, and Pakistanis are bracing for the impact.

What’s the New Levy?

Here’s the lowdown on the new rates for fuel bought at petrol stations:

  • Petrol: Rs. 78.02 per liter (up by Rs. 8.02)
  • High-Speed Diesel: Rs. 77.01 per liter
  • High Octane (HOBC): Rs. 78.02 per liter
  • E-10 Gasoline: Rs. 51.53 per liter
  • Kerosene Oil: Rs. 18.95 per liter
  • Light Diesel Oil: Rs. 15.37 per liter

For direct sales (like to businesses), the levy is even higher—up to Rs. 86.66 for petrol and Rs. 85.65 for diesel.

Why the Hike?

The government scrapped an old rule (Fifth Schedule of the Petroleum Development Levy) that capped the levy at Rs. 70 per liter. Now, there’s no limit, giving the government a free hand to set rates as high as they want. It’s a move to boost cash flow but could mean pricier fuel for everyone.

What’s the Worry?

Higher levies often lead to bigger fuel bills, hitting drivers, commuters, and businesses hard. With no cap on the levy, many Pakistanis fear more price jumps are coming, making daily travel and transport costlier.

Why It Hits Home

From rickshaw drivers to families on road trips, fuel prices touch every Pakistani’s wallet. This change could squeeze budgets, especially for those already feeling the pinch.

Stay tuned for updates, and let’s hope for some relief at the pumps soon!
