CDA Plans Transition to Electric Vehicles for a Greener Islamabad

Chairman Capital Development Authority (CDA), Muhammad Ali Randhawa, unveiled plans to transition commercial vehicles in Islamabad to electric power. He emphasized the importance of this move for creating a greener and more efficient public transport system.

Reducing Carbon Emissions

The shift from traditional buses to electric buses is expected to modernize the city’s transport infrastructure while significantly reducing carbon emissions, marking an important step toward environmental sustainability.

Financial Support for Operators

Randhawa directed efforts to explore soft loans for commercial transport operators to ease the transition to electric vehicles. He also suggested offering special incentives to encourage faster adoption of electric mobility.

Securing International Funding

Cooperation from International Financial Institutions (IFIs) will be sought to secure funding for the project. The initiative will focus on earning carbon credits and minimizing environmental impact, with the Ministry of Climate Change onboard to ensure alignment with national climate goals.

Charging Infrastructure Upgrades

Upgrading the city’s charging infrastructure is critical for the success of the initiative. The CDA highlighted the need for well-developed charging stations to support the new electric bus fleet.

Engaging Institutions

The CDA will work with schools, colleges, universities, and other institutions in Islamabad to facilitate the shift to electric buses, ensuring widespread participation in this green transition.
