Schools and Colleges in Punjab Shut Down in Five More Divisions Due to Smog
Amid escalating air pollution, the Punjab government has ordered the closure of educational institutions across five additional divisions, aiming to protect public health from the adverse effects of worsening smog conditions. The newly affected areas include Sargodha, Rawalpindi, Dera Ghazi Khan, Bahawalpur, and Sahiwal divisions, where schools, colleges, and tuition centers will be closed from November 13 to 17. This decision follows an official directive from the Environmental Protection Department, as air quality continues to reach dangerous levels.
Air Quality in Punjab Reaches Hazardous Levels
Punjab is currently experiencing severe smog, with Lahore, the provincial capital, emerging as one of the most polluted cities in the world. According to recent data, Lahore’s air quality index (AQI) has reached a hazardous level, averaging around 588, which is nearly 74 times higher than the World Health Organization’s recommended safety limit. These alarming figures reflect the urgent need for immediate actions to curb air pollution and protect public health.
Closure and Restrictions Across Multiple Divisions
The closure affects all schools, academies, and tuition centers for students from nursery to grade 12. Previously imposed shutdowns in the Gujranwala, Lahore, Multan, and Faisalabad divisions remain in place. The government’s proactive measures target the heavy smog that continues to pose significant health risks across the province.
Additional Restrictions in Lahore
Lahore has implemented additional restrictions, with the district administration issuing a ban on all outdoor activities from November 11 to 17. These restrictions prohibit sports, events, and outdoor dining to minimize exposure to hazardous air quality levels. However, religious gatherings remain exempt from these limitations, as stated in a notification issued by the Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Lahore.
Provincial Government Responds to Lahore High Court Directive
In compliance with a directive from the Lahore High Court (LHC), the Punjab government has imposed broader restrictions on outdoor activities and the retail sector across four districts. These new measures reflect a commitment to address the smog crisis that shows no sign of improvement.
Early Closure of Shops and Markets
As part of the government’s anti-smog initiatives, shops, markets, and malls in the affected areas will close by 8 PM, with specific exceptions for essential services such as medical stores, labs, petrol stations, and grocery outlets. The objective of these measures is to reduce vehicular and commercial emissions, which are major contributors to the current pollution levels.
By enforcing these closures and restrictions, the Punjab government aims to protect public health while working to address the pressing challenge of air pollution across the province.
